On September 22, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the BRICS foreign ministers' meeting in New York.

Wang Yi said, in June this year, the 14th BRICS Summit was successfully held, and the leaders of the five countries had in-depth exchange under the theme of "Foster High-quality BRICS Partnership, Usher in a New Era for Global Development" and reached broad consensus, embarking on a new journey of BRICS cooperation. At present, the international situation is turbulent and unstable with constantly emerging global challenges. Security is a precondition for development, and development is a guarantee for security. BRICS countries should work for making development a priority at the current session of the General Assembly to inject impetus into the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We should resolutely resist decoupling, severing supply chains and barriers in science and technology, and jointly build an open world economy, so as to achieve a more robust, greener and more balanced global development.

Wang Yi stressed, multilateralism is facing serious impacts of power politics and unilateral hegemony, and false multilateralism in various forms is even more confusing. BRICS countries should take the lead in safeguarding the UN-centered international system, upholding the authority of the United Nations and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and following the principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, so as to jointly push for an international order that is more just and more equitable. We should focus on the long-term development and practical needs of BRICS countries, respond positively to the expectations of all parties, and steadily push forward membership expansion.

Wang Yi expressed, the G20 Leaders' Summit in Bali is now around the corner, and we should strengthen communication and coordination to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of emerging markets and developing countries. We should follow the strategic guidance of leaders of BRICS countries, implement the outcomes of the Summit, build BRICS consensus, convey BRICS confidence, show BRICS strength, and create a brighter future for the BRICS mechanism.
